Position Summary

Our team is growing, and we are looking for a Systems Develop /Data Engineer to join us. The successful candidate will contribute to designing, developing, and testing various system components within Onpoint's Claims Data Manager (CDM) system. CDM is a cloud-based web application that leverages big data technologies to transform, and make accessible, massive amounts of healthcare data to Onpoint staff, Onpoint's clients, and researchers across the country. The Systems Developer / Data Engineer plays a vital role in the continued success of Onpoint by ensuring that solutions are intuitive, efficient, and cost effective, allowing Onpoint to remain the market leader in delivering healthcare data management services. They will acquire a diverse skillset including, among other tools, SQL, Java, and AWS Services and will develop a strong understanding of CDM's underlying processes to analyze and troubleshoot issues and provide effective quality assurance and operational support. As a Systems Developer / Data Engineer, you will work with a group of talented engineers and healthcare data experts within an Agile software development methodology to build industry leading applications and leverage the latest technologies to tackle complex data management problems. Varying levels of experience will be considered.


  • Own the design and modification of key system functionality, collaborating with other developers and technical staff.
  • Convert complex specifications into efficient code and tools within agreed upon timeframes
  • Write and automate system testing in order to verify the functionality of the CDM system
  • Research, evaluate, recommend, and implement new products, tools, and software solutions 
  • Work closely and effectively with developers, business analysts, and other stakeholders within an Agile software development methodology
  • Follow project specifications closely, and clearly communicate progress and status
  • Participate actively in regular status meetings, communicating effectively in both verbal and written form
  • Perform operational, production support, and maintenance tasks; troubleshoot existing system issues
  • Actively seek opportunities to learn and gain higher levels of responsibility on the team
  • Contribute clear and accurate technical documentation
  • Review other engineers' work and provide feedback to improve overall quality of developed code


  • Understand the value that Onpoint places on maintaining the confidentiality and integrity of our corporate and client data and meet applicable privacy and security compliance requirements
  • Ensure that Onpoint and client is accessed, handled, processed, transmitted, disclosed, and stored according to operational and IT policies and procedures
  • Immediately report any suspected or actual violation of privacy and security policies or unauthorized access or disclosure of Onpoint or client data
  • Understand that compliance with all privacy and security policies, laws, and regulations is part of each employee's annual performance evaluation 
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures as outlined in Onpoint's Employee Handbook
  • Performa all other duties as assigned


  • A bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or a related field or one (1) or more years of similar work experience
  • We are looking for individuals with experience or academic training in one or more of the following:
    • Application development using Java, SQL, and/or Python
    • Designing and or working with databases and complex data structures
    • Automated QA testing
    • Linux operating system
    • Performance tuning - analyzing log data and query tuning and optimization 
  • Experience in one of these areas is a plus:
    •  Working with Hadoop, SparksSQL, Amazon EMR, Parquet, Amazon Athena, Amazon Redshift
    • Familiarity with WebApp development technologies and frameworks such as Ruby on Rails, JavaScript, Spring, and React
    • Familiarity with test automation and performance testing tools such as Cypress and Apache JMeter
    • Working with healthcare data
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and work with new tools as systems and business needs evolve
  • Attention to detail and curiosity to probe further into data
  • Experienced in diagnosing technical challenges by reading code and technical documentation 
  • Ability to work well independently, within, and across teams
  • Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and time management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Varying level of experience will be considered 
  • Must be available to work hybrid schedule with two in-office days per week, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Candidates applying from outside of the Greater Portland/Southern Maine/Midcoast Maine areas: please indicate your interest/intention of relocating to the area.
