Indiana Health Prices Chatbot Recognized Nationally with NAHDO 2026 Innovation in Data Dissemination Award
May 2026 — Onpoint Health Data and the Indiana Department of Insurance (IDOI) are proud to announce that the Indiana Health Prices Chatbot has received the 2026 Innovation in Data Dissemination Award from the National Association of Health Data Organizations (NAHDO). Presented annually since 2009, the award recognizes an organization’s dedication to effectively communicating health data to the public.
Developed and managed by Onpoint in partnership with the Indiana Department of Insurance, the Indiana Health Prices Chatbot reimagines how consumers can interact with healthcare information. Rather than relying solely on static dashboards or downloadable reports, the chatbot provides a conversational interface that allows users to ask plain-language questions about healthcare costs, procedures, providers, and quality measures and receive real-time responses derived from the Indiana All-Payer Claims Database (APCD) and other approved public data sources.
“Affordability is my top priority and for that to happen, we need greater transparency in healthcare prices. Indiana has invested in tools such as this to ensure we are doing all we can to enhance transparency and thus affordability,” says Governor Mike Braun. “Receiving national recognition for our data dissemination underscores the importance of making information clear, accessible, and meaningful. Greater transparency across our healthcare system empowers individuals and families to make informed decisions with confidence.”
“The launch of the new chatbot and the NAHDO award represents a proud milestone for Indiana," adds Jonathan Handsborough, Executive Director of Indiana Health Prices. “By transforming how healthcare data is accessed and understood, it empowers Hoosiers with the knowledge they need to make confident, informed decisions for themselves and their families.”
Powered by large language model (LLM) technology and a retrieval-augmented generation architecture, the chatbot makes complex healthcare data more approachable while maintaining industry-leading standards of privacy, security, and accuracy. The platform incorporates ADA-compliant design principles, guided prompts, and a conversational tone that serves users across a wide range of health literacy levels. At the same time, the system maintains rigorous compliance with the U.S. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), adheres to data suppression standards from the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and reports only aggregated information to protect privacy.
The project sets a new standard in heath data dissemination, cross-agency collaboration, and stakeholder engagement, bringing together expertise in healthcare data management, public transparency, accessibility, and emerging AI technologies to better serve Indiana’s residents.
