Curious, resourceful, and receptive.

I like both, but probably coffee.
Cats or dogs?
I like both, but I’ve got two cats.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
Longevity. I love learning and like to see how things change over time.
What’s your go-to karaoke song?
I’m not much of a karaoke person.
If you could eat only one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Sushi.
About Yourself
Tell us a bit about yourself. What do you like to do outside of work? Any hobbies or hidden talents that your team might not know about?
I like exercising – either running or biking, primarily – as well as reading. Recently, I’ve been getting more into gardening. In terms of hobbies or hidden talents, probably running was my talent back in the day. I was serious about it in my high school and college days. Outside of that, I can ride a unicycle.
How would you describe your role? What skills do you rely on most?
In my role as a leader, I bridge the business needs of the company with our technical solutioning. I don’t do much direct technical work these days. It’s mostly communicating with various groups to make sure everyone knows what we’re doing and why we’re doing it. In terms of skills, it’s mostly communication, whether that’s translating technical concepts into easier-to-understand language or helping to communicate our technical vision both internally and externally.
What are some highlights of your work – both in your role and with your team?
In terms of highlights, from a technical standpoint, there’s been a lot that we’ve achieved since I’ve been here. For example, our move from on-premises data storage to the cloud with Amazon Web Services (AWS) – with that, we had a complete re-architecture of our system to be cloud-native. More recently, there was the launch of our Data Navigator solution. With both moves, we overcame some really tough technical challenges, and, in particular, the move to the cloud has enabled much of the growth we’ve had in recent years in terms of our ability to scale and take on more data.
From a team perspective, I think some of the highlights are how much we’ve grown, both in terms of number of staff but also in our skillset. Since I’ve been here, as a group, we’ve matured a lot in our application development. We’ve always been great at data management and data processing, but more recently we’ve added design and user interface skills to our arsenal.
About Working at Onpoint
Why did you decide to work for Onpoint?
I came to Onpoint seven years ago. At the time I was looking for smaller, more agile organization – something more entrepreneurial compared to where I was coming from. It offered some interesting challenges and a great team.
What do you enjoy most about working at Onpoint?
The people. Being in a small organization that’s mission-driven, we have attracted some top-notch people and that makes the day-to-day work more fun.
What excites you most about the company’s future?
There’s still a lot of interesting technical challenges that we’re working on and we’ll continue to work on those. Being in a tech role, the rise of generative AI is kind of changing how people think about software and it’s exciting to be leading that, both within our organization and within our market. Onpoint continues to grow, which creates its own interesting challenges as a leader.
About Growth & Teamwork
What’s a new skill or lesson you’ve learned on the job that has helped you grow?
This was the first place where I took on a manager role, so there’s a whole bunch of manager skills that I’ve gained over the years – providing feedback, recruiting approaches, or repeating certain types of communication such that everyone knows what you’re shooting for. I’ve honed all those skills here over the years.
What advice would you give to someone just starting in your field?
Be curious. It’s usually beneficial to not narrow your focus too early in your career, so try a lot of things and see what connects. Then start optimizing your career from there once you’ve kind of seen how you interact with different opportunities.
How do teamwork and collaboration play a role in your day-to-day work?
It’s probably the most important part of my role. In terms of managing a team, a lot of my time goes into fostering that within our teams and our culture. I think looking outside my own team, it’s an important facet of my communication with other teams, to make sure we’re working together toward a shared goal both for our internal teams and for our clients. Making sure we’re building things that are useful to them.
