About Yourself
Tell us a bit about yourself. What do you like to do outside of work? Any hobbies or hidden talents that your team might not know about?
I love spending time with my family, including our two dogs, two bunnies, and six chickens. I like to be active. I also enjoy hiking, swimming, and playing ultimate frisbee and squash. I recently started playing the piano, and I enjoy woodworking and woodcarving. I’ve made chess boards, cutting boards, and small wood carvings, and I’m currently making my first piece of furniture.
How would you describe your role? What skills do you rely on most?
I oversee the work of the data visualization and reporting team and the development of our Data Navigator platform. I listen closely to other team members, facilitate cross-team communication, guide project direction and strategy, and make sure everyone has what they need to succeed.
What are some highlights of your work – both in your role and with your team?
The development of the Data Navigator platform and its implementation across our client base is a highlight. It allows our clients to access their data at the granularity they need as seamlessly as possible, accommodating each user’s level of technical expertise. Ultimately, the whole point of our work is to give our clients -- and sometimes the general public -- the information they need to help guide their decisions. Data Navigator is designed to do that as intuitively as possible while maintaining the strictest security and quality standards.
About Working at Onpoint
Why did you decide to work for Onpoint?
I decided to work at Onpoint because I wanted my work to have a direct impact on people’s lives in a positive way. I wanted to solve problems and work in an interesting, dynamic field.
What do you enjoy most about working at Onpoint?
We have a great team and a great culture here. People are motivated, they work hard, they support one another. We’re all trying to help our clients find accurate information and make informed decisions. Ultimately, it’s all about making people healthier. The work itself is always evolving. There’s always a new problem to solve, a new tool to learn, something interesting to explore. It’s very dynamic. I also like that we are a mission-driven nonprofit.
What excites you most about the company’s future?
I think what excites me most is continuing to find ways to make data more actionable and useful to our clients and their users. With the advent of new technology and better tools, we’ll be able to more quickly and more fully help our clients track information and find answers to their questions. We’re working hard to make things easier for them so they can use the complex and nuanced data we collect to inform health policy and improve the health of the people in their communities.
About Growth & Teamwork
What’s a new skill or lesson you’ve learned on the job that has helped you grow?
Nothing ever goes perfectly to plan. Something will always happen that you can’t anticipate, or some limitation or nuance will appear that you have to address. As long as you have the right people in the room, there’s always a way forward.
What advice would you give to someone just starting in your field?
Ask a lot of questions. Don’t get discouraged easily. Going along with my last answer, there’s always a solution to the problems you run into – you just have to find that solution, and, more often than not, doing so will require leaning on others around you.
How do teamwork and collaboration play a role in your day-to-day work?
For any project at Onpoint to be successful, it has to be collaborative. All our projects require expertise and input from people who have different knowledge, take a different perspective, and work on different teams. You need to make sure that everyone gets to work to their strengths and feels supported by those around them.
